Ski Trip 2011 - day 1

We've really enjoyed our first day here in Austria. We were a bit worried when we arrived yesterday because the weather is roasting and everywhere is looking very green, so we haven't been able to use the lift or the piste system closest the hotel because there isn't enough snow in the valley. Luckily we are being bussed over to nearby Leogang, where the snow is slushy but definitely there! Conditions were particularly good first thing in the morning. We've got two groups - beginngers and top group. The beginners have made amazing progress today with everyone nailing snow plough turns, while the top group took in most of the pistes and worked on their turning technique. Leogang was celebrating its 40th anniversary today so there were celebrations going on. We saw lots of people skiing in traditional costume - skirts and bloomers - on very old wooden skis with one wooden pole. At lunchtime we sat out in the sun enjoying a traditional Alpine band entertaining the crowds. We're really impressed to report no injuries so far (except when Tealah walked into a door and bumped her nose!) and nobody caught the sun which was amazing, since it has been clear blue skies all day. We're expecting a drop in temperature around Tuesday and possibly even some more snow. Tomorrow night we're off down to Zell am See to try our hand at curling! Hopefully we'll have some pictures to share tomorrow too.
